I realized recently that the last twenty years have made me extremely jaded when it comes to Superman.
Not the character. Love Clark. Always will.
No, I’m talking about when it comes to news about Superman projects in the larger media.
Everyone ready for a tweet thread? 1/

Let’s go back to 1997. Or was it 1998? 2020 has blown the curve on telling time.
Anyway, the announcement came down the Wizard pike that there was going to be a new Superman movie. We had no reason to think it wouldn’t happen. There wasn’t a year in the ‘90s that didn’t...2/

...have some form of Superman on television. Between the Superboy series (1988-1992), Lois and Clark (1993-1997), & S:TAS (1996-2000) we were good.
So a new Superman movie seem perfectly reasonable.
Right?

...didn’t happen it was a shock. The kind of shock that happens when you are incredibly spoiled. It was the free throw fallacy in Superman form.
And the weird thing was, between Justice League (and JLU) & Smallville, Superman (in some form) didn’t leave the zeitgeist. 4/

But as awesome as JL & Smallville were (mostly) it wasn’t like having a straight up, now tell me you want to love me forever (oh, oh, oh) Superman solo film or series.
It was more like a hit and run.
Then came the endless rumors & never fully realized productions train. 5/

Seriously. It was a lot. McGee. J.J. Abrams. Brett Ratner. Wolfgang Peterson. All of these names kept getting thrown at us. And none of them came to fruition.
It got to the point that we never thought we’d get another Superman movie again.
But remember...Superman...6/

...never...left...the airwaves.
“Smallville wasn’t Superman!”
Yeah. I know. I even said it. I was wrong.
Anyway, Superman Returns came and went and didn’t stick the landing and we dealt with more rumors of a sequel and that turned into Man of Steel and I just can’t even...7/

...on how many times I was just heartbroken when something didn’t happen.
The effect this had was to make me jaded to any kind of rumors about Suoerman returning to the big screen. I’ll believe it when I see it. I won’t get fooled again.
But...here’s the thing...8/

WE KEEP GETTING SUPERMAN RELATED STUFF!
WE GOT THREE CLARK KENTS DURING THE CRISIS!
Maybe I need to appreciate what I have instead of pining for what might never happen.
Maybe that’s healthier.
Your mileage may vary. 9/9
