So apparently some people need to hear this today. Dolly Parton is one of the absolute greatest singers in the world. How can I say this? Back before auto tune, mix engineers had a trick of tightening vocal pitches by varispeeding the tape up a bpm or so during a mix down 1/6
This works because if the tape is faster the pitches are higher because their frequency has been raised. This reduces the relative distance between pitches as a total percentage and that effect is audible. 2/6
Vibrato is a variance in pitch. Generally people will find a vibrato
with fluctuations that are smooth and evenly centered around a target pitch to be pleasant. Dolly has a lot of vibrato but it’s almost inhumanly smooth and this can be demonstrated. 3/6
Slowing a tape ( yes we still call it tape it’s a thing deal! 😂 ) will produce the opposite effect and increase the perception of pitch variance. If a singer’s pitch is accurate this still gets done to “beef up” a vocal sound but this too is used sparingly. 4/6
Below is Dolly singing Jolene at 33 rpm instead of 45. It’s way lower, half an octave about than the OG. This would make most voices even many world class ones sound wobbly af but behold Dolly’s Kung Fu! 5/6
Dolly’s awesomeness as a human is just as impressive and if there is any more Dolly slagging, I may have to do a storm on that 😂 6/6
