The road of Silent Sam was long, violent, exhausting, and more. It’s shadow still haunts campus as UNC’s white supremacy never started or ended with the statue.

As new generations of UNC students come in, the history cannot be forgotten. It must be retold over and over.
Upon the statue’s erection, Julian Carr bragged about whipping a “Negro wench.” White supremacists regularly came to the statue armed saying they’d kill us.

The statue was meant to let Black people know, we’ll never be safe at UNC. Violence was just around the corner.
UNCPD protected these white supremacists and the statue. They brutalized and beat our members.

SS stood tall. But we stood taller. August 20th, 2018 it was torn down. A testament to community power, & determination to make a better world. Happy 2 years of a fallen Silent Sam.
