We have protested, we have advocated, we have sat at every table and we have lost so many ppl there are days Im swimming in grief and despair I can barely get out of bed. And yet we keep fighting for public health emergency, for resources and coordination and for 5+ yrs. https://twitter.com/omarmosleh/status/1294704841302798337
Today the Gov’t announce funding for safe supply in Toronto. It’s a pilot, it’s funding until March 31 and it isn’t enough. There are communities across the country and across the province desperate to roll out similar initiatives.
Safe supply or let die? @PattyHajdu
Safe supply or let die? @PattyHajdu
The Fed prosecutors announced their policy change for a decrim ultra light which is not decrim and still targets those who are already targets - ppl buying drugs off the street. Cause those who are not poor, not racialized, not on the street are already not a target.
You can be using drugs your whole life, have them delivered to your home, snort them away in hip washroom bars and never have to deal with police because the laws don’t really target you. You aren’t the police meal ticket, the low hanging fruit.
So get at me “government of Canada” when you introduce policies that won’t kill ppl. Like some real decrim, some fucking coordination, a real strategy, actual robust funding, and some equal distribution of it across the country. @BillBlair @PattyHajdu
Cos i live in a province that had 44 deaths a week and now has 55-80. Where the response to the crisis ground to a halt when @fordnation came in to power and where you could have stepped in and really helped us by funding SCS/OPS.
And you need fund them across the country. In Saskatchewan @prairiehr who are ready to open, in Lethbridge @ARCHESLeth who’s 13 booths are closing, in Victoria @AVIVanIsle who don’t have a public accesible site and any other community who’s desperate to respond.
Everyday, many of us are trying to hold it together as we advocate for housing, for a response to the overdose crisis, to COVID 19 and you have burnt out us the fuck out. We have to fight, work and mourn constantly. Give us our fucking emergency and the ACTUAL RESOURCES
So while I should be “happy” about the Fed announcement for funding for safe supply in Toronto. (Advocates, Drs and researchers have put in a lot of work to get us here). - I’m angry. Because there are ppl who could have benefited from this yrs ago who are DEAD.
The resources that orgs get to even run SCS/OPS is so low that workers are mega exploited at minimum wage or just above or below doing really traumatic work. It’s repulsive. Little supports exist and if ppl weren’t all doing this work imagine how many more ppl would be dead!
I hate all of this. 5+ years and it’s a horrible tragedy of epic proportions
