Since Trump and Pompeo have used bullying as foreign policy, it was inevitable that the Europeans would respond by using schadenfreude as foreign policy. Sad, though: I expected more grown-up behavior from the Europeans. 1/
They’ve responded to Trump’s recklessness with their own... make no mistake, strengthening the mass-murdering regime in Tehran is catastrophically reckless. 2/
The E3 leaders can smirk at Trump’s humiliation today, but the brute reality is that more people will die, many more will fear death because of their failure to shackle the Islamic Republic. 3/
In the final analysis, Merkel, Macron and Johnson chose political point-scoring over someone they hate over the lives of millions. European values, it turns out, are not that different from Trump’s values. 4/
Merkel, Macron and Johnson will be toasted by Assad and Nasrallah, as well as Xi and Putin. From Khamenei, they will get only scorn. 5/
It’s now up to American unilateral sanctions to deny the Europeans any remuneration for selling out the millions menaced by Iran. Schadenfreude will have to suffice.
