I have been privy to a lot of conversations lately that have been really interesting from a creator standpoint. 1/8
As someone who has no power it’s very hard to see what happens when you do. But first, what is power? Creative power is success. Success means you have been ID’d as the reason said property generated revenue. 2/8
(Studios exist of course to exploit IP and generate revenue for their parent companies) 3/8
So once you have been identified as someone who is creatively responsible for revenue generation the balance of power shifts...dramatically. 4/8
How dramatically you might ask? I would offer an example. A TV Exec (SVP) responsible for $500m in production recently told me he can’t change the way daily production reports (DPR’s) are created b/c the AD could complain to the Showrunner who could then get him in trouble. 5/8
B. I would say Joss Whedon’s recent issues stem from this same dynamic. When you are seen as a money maker YOU HAVE THE POWER. {Sadly, until that point, you are generally seen as an annoyance.} 6/8
This may not be news to anyone but it’s important to remember that when* you are finally a huge success that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Remind yourself of that. 7/8
* being a success isn’t guaranteed but I hope you have some. 8/8
