Again,we have returned to the uninformed and misinformed carrying veiled threats of " well, the Irish need 'our' land bridge.
Let me explain by altering the perspective.
1/7
Britain trades with Turkey, with Russia, with countries like Russia, Ukraine, with east med states like Israel.
British trucks drive through EU countries to enable that trade to happen. This is , possibly obviously, called "Transit".
It happens all over the world.
2/7
The International system is TIR ( Transports Internationaux Routiers) that dates from 1975. Simply, it is an international agreement that allows transport from A to C via B without B being an eejit and delaying or interrupting the passage .
UK is a full member .
3/7
EU has a parrralel sysstem called the CTC (Common Transit Convention).
UK is a full member . It has signed up to being a party to the convention even as a non-member, even after transition.
Without it, UK trucks could not pass unhindered across the EU.
4/7
As all multilateral and bilateral agreements work....they are reciprocal.
So, GB truck to Switzerland depends on it .
Irl Truck to France via GB depends on it.
Irl has other options (by sea) and goods not time sensitive already use that route and that will increase .
5/7
So, the childish " we could close the landbridge " really means " we (UK) could stop all British transit across Europe and become isolated like a leper island".
I hope this perspective explains tthe absurdity of empty threats.
But, there is more..
6/7
The Legal Treaty we call the "Withdrawal Agreement" also enshrines the "landbridge" access into International Law.
I hope , next time someone reads this pathetic threat again, just quote this thread and save your time for more important arguments.
FIN
as a P.S. of the 100% of Irl to GB goods traffic. 38 % is from Northern Ireland .
of the 100% , 31% is transiting to continental EU, the rest is feeding England with medical devices, pharma, machinery , minerals and.... yes food as well.
