Other major players, including our allies, have refused to get sucked into this ill-conceived ploy, seeing it as an effort to goad the Iranians to abandon the nuclear deal & even withdraw from the NPT. The US goal of bringing about an int'l crisis has been resoundingly rejected.
If Tehran meets this moment with restraint, it’s likely everyone will play for time & await the results of the US elections. We should be concerned that Trump et al might use this time to escalate in order to create a distraction from failures at home and his sagging poll numbers
Pompeo could have focused his time at the UN today to initiate and lead a global effort to tackle COVID-19 that ultimately would help Americans who are suffering from the pandemic and economic hardship.
Instead he came to town to dig in on a doomed political stunt.
