West Greenwich traffic restrictions have gone live today. No more through traffic from the A2 to Greenwich town centre. A thread..... @853london @TheMurkyDepths @GreenwichSoc @Royal_Greenwich @GreenGreenwich @WestcombeSoc
As part of an experimental traffic order, signage has been displayed on the A2 explaining there is no through traffic to Greenwich town centre via Crooms Hill https://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/info/200266/roadworks_and_traffic/2075/greenwich_liveable_neighbourhood
Motorists turning into General Wolfe Road are met with further signage warning of the new traffic restrictions.
Carry on down Crooms Hill and further signage explains road ahead closed, albeit some motorists were driving past thinking it didn’t apply to them.
Continue on down to the Greenwich Theatre and the changes soon become apparent. No through traffic for cars, vans and lorries and only a tight space for vehicles that ignored the signs to turn around. Priority now for
and pedestrians.

Motorists trying to find another way through will be sorely disappointed. Head along King George Street to Royal Place and another road closure has been implemented.
On again and Hyde Vale has another road closure. Motorists ignoring the first set of barriers won’t get far - there’s another bollard and planters set further back. One van driver got out with set of keys to try and remove the bollard - he failed and had to turn round.
Reach the far end of King George Street and motorists can’t turn from Point Hill onto Royal Hill. Yet another road closure installed.
Options for motorists determined to cut through are fast running out. Motorists seeking a detour via Winforton Street onto Blisset St will find that’s also closed. No way thorough.
Last but not least, motorists heading back up Point Hill to Maidenstone Hill will find that option has also been closed off.
This is day 1 of the changes and clearly it will take some time to bed in. The main message to share far and wide is there is no route for through traffic. Fortunately google maps has already been updated and so sat navs should avoid the area.
For local residents living south of the road closures the only access and egress is via the A2. For residents living north of the road closures, access and egressis via Greenwich High Road and Greenwich South Street.
Time will tell if the majority of local residents support or oppose the changes. It should dramatically reduce traffic through West Greenwich while improving the area for cyclists and pedestrians. In due course, we will probably need a similar scheme for Westcombe Park!
