I am once again asking why we should be excited to have a woman Speaker of the House, VP, President, etc. if they don’t support policies and candidates trying to help working class and marginalized women.
A Julián Castro presidency would have been better for women than an Amy Klobuchar one despite the glass ceiling not breaking.
And part of what made EW‘s candidacy so special was that she used her struggles as a young mother to formulate plans like universal childcare, universal healthcare, and cancelling student loan debt that would improve the lives of the most vulnerable women in our country.
“Elect women” is a nice slogan but I think it can get in the way of true progress, especially at higher levels of govt, when the women we’re supposed to elect have more allegiance to their donors and a commitment to maintaining the status quo than to actually helping women.
Ed Markey’s Green New Deal realizes the intersection of climate policy with racial and economic justice like little other legislation and Nancy Pelosi endorsing his challenger (after blacklisting challengers in the House) shows that she isn’t a champion for working class women.
Anyways I’m just annoyed at how girl boss culture has permeated politics and made feminist icons out of women who don’t fight for other women in any real way.
