Just wanna build on this thread a little. Whatever you make on streaming (or YouTube, or patreon, or OF, or whatever) is NOT your take-home pay.

Taxes. Expenses. Savings. Insurance. Emergencies. And what about if you ever can’t stream for a week, or a month? https://twitter.com/inwhat123/status/1296451270862086144
Self employment is a HUGE financial risk. I know it’s tempting to watch others on the internet chase and even achieve their dreams, but please do yourself the favor of a) talking to actual self employed people, b) building up 3-6 months of expenses in savings, and—
— c) doing a ton of research. A TON of research. Talk to an accountant about taxes. Learn what sort of paperwork and fees are necessary to run a business in your state. If you sell merch, research sales tax. Make a budget. Make a business plan.
A lot of people you see as sailing along, making a living off of streaming, are a) relying on support structures you can’t see (a partner, a family, inherited wealth), b) doing a lot more work behind the scenes than you think, and/or c) not actually making full-time money.
I talk about creative self employment a lot — here on twitter, on YouTube, on my website, etc. If you have questions or concerns or just want to know more about it, feel free to email me at [email protected], I would love to be a resource.
I know it’s not fun and cheerful to say this stuff. I know many of you would rather hear “you can do it!! Chase your dreams!” And you CAN do it — but only if you put the sweat in, and you take it seriously. Running a business is hard! Even if the business is playing video games.
