Netflix might have destroyed the career of a French-Senegalese filmmaker because they marketed her film, a commentary on how society disgustingly sexualizes young girls and the struggle of growing up Black in France, as disturbing pedobait.
All the conversations around Maïmouna Doucouré are now focused on accusing her of awful things solely because of how Netflix presented her film. This is fucking appalling.
I haven’t seen the film but everything I’ve read about it (which took 2 minutes of googling) seems to suggest that the film is about the exact thing Netflix did. It’s so, so fucked up.
And to be clear, I don’t blame people for being outraged! A first impression is everything. If your average person was scrolling through Netflix and saw that poster with that description, how couldn’t you be disgusted? It’s gross!
Netflix knew better. They knew exactly what kind of message that would send. It’s impossible to wrap my head around how they could go ahead with that marketing.
Addendum to all of this: this is only based off of reviews from people who saw the film and interviews with the director. If you’ve seen the film and there’s something actually problematic within, I’m 100% open to being wrong. But as it stands, it appears this is all on Netflix.

Oh wow, I muted this but this is nuts. Anyhow:

1. Donate to BLM organizations
2. Send Black Trans folks $$$
3. Free Palestine
4. It’s hot out there. Give water to unhoused people
5. Wear a fucking mask
6. . Follow me
There are people in mentions who are angry despite the context and you know what? I don’t entirely disagree with the notion that this story could’ve been told a different way, possibly through a doc. I was only providing context into the Doucouré’s intent.

A very good and disturbing point made below! https://twitter.com/nprandchill/status/1296583258336104450
I totally just realized that the original tweet should say “may have” and it’s going to haunt me for the rest of my life.
It’s apparent that a lot of what’s happening now is bad faith, right wing trolling and I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that they ran yet another Black woman off the internet
