More than three years ago over breakfast at Balthazar, @lavallee and I first chatted about what R&D could be for an organization like @nytimes. I joined shortly after and we banged our heads for a long time, but ... 2/8
Over time, @nytimesrd has grown from 2 to 30+ people helping to reduce the gap between readers and storytellers. Their work spans 6 focuses from documenting the world in 3D to building tools for journalists in the field to combatting misinformation. https://rd.nytimes.com/  3/8
The team had to rethink how to best help the newsroom with its Covid coverage. Like many newsrooms, @nytimes gets lots of questions from readers, which only increased during quarantine. With so many questions, it was impossible for reporters to reply to everyone. So ... 6/8
R&D built a human-reinforced machine learning CMS to cluster related questions, show unanswered question clusters, and respond to reader questions immediately if their question had been answered already. (this was also my first NYT credit).
