Who is Khawlah Bint Al-Azwar? 🧵
I’ve noticed that not a lot of people are familiar with one of th greatest female military leaders in Islamic history and I think everyone should hear about her bravery and fearlessness.
Khawlah Bint Al-Azwar (RA) was born in the seventh century in Arabia and is the sister of Dhiraar Bin Al-Azwar, the legendary soldier and commander of the Rashidun Army during the 7th century Muslim conquest.
She was well known for her leadership in battles of the Muslim conquests in parts of what are today: Syria, Jordan, and Palestine. She fought with her brother Dhiraar in many battles including the battle of Yarmouk in 636 AD against the Byzantine empire.
On the fourth day of the battle, she led a group of women against the Byzantine army and was wounded during her fight with a Greek soldier.
She was most known for her bravery during the battle of Thaniyyat Al Aqaba in 634 AD where her brother Dhiraar was wounded and taken as a prisoner by the Byzantine army.
Khalid Ibn Al-Walid took his mobile guard to rescue him while she accompanied the army and rushed on the Byzantine rearguard all by herself. She was wearing an armor and a loose Arabian dress so it was not obvious that she was a woman until Khalid asked about her identity.
She also fought in the Battle of Ajnadin and she was said to be really talented and brave to the point where she was mistaken for being Khalid Bin Al-Walid because she was veiled. She took part in many other battles as well.
She died around 639 AD possibly due to a plague along with her brother Dhiraar. However, her name and legacy still live on till this day. Jordan issued a stamp in her honor as part of the “Arab Women in History”.
A Iraqi all-women military unit is named the Khawlah Bin Al-Azkar unit. The first military college for women in the UAE is named Khawlah Bint Al-Azwar Training college. And many other Arab cities have schools or institutions that carry her name.
She was described as fearless, brave, and daring and I think every Muslim woman should read about her. Jazakum Allahu Khayran 💕
