This is a good thread to think with re KH and critical self-reflexivity in TamBram diaspora esp, and where my mind was wandering with my earlier tweet on the power of language https://twitter.com/sevendeviled/status/1296307702419922946
Without question the power of language to invoke community affiliations is strong. When those affiliations are rooted in caste and race privilege they mustn’t be uncritically validated.
KH is Tamil, savarna, Black, has unacceptable carceral politics, all these things are true, and if I am able to uncritically align with one aspect of her identity and ignore the others, that’s a position of privilege and needs swift reconsideration
there’s a lot to grapple with from an anthropological perspective. But caste and race violence are at the core of the histories that bring us to this moment, and I have to also think about my positionality re that
I’m still thinking, and I think slowly these days. But that’s a good thread I linked in the first tweet. Do read it
