Some coverage of the debate on the cycle lane on Shannon Bridge in both Limerick papers today. No matter your view or political persuasion there are some irrefutable truths;

1) Cycle lanes do not take space away from older ppl or ppl with a disability. They give space back.
2) 2 out of every 3 cars crossing Shannon Bridge turns right onto the Dock Road. Traffic targets for Limerick Tunnel have never been met due to the ease at which traffic can go over Shannon Bridge.

3) The tax payer is paying for this. EST 28M in next 5 yrs. guaranteed to 2041.
4) putting a third traffic lane back on Shannon Bridge will not ‘enhance the environmental quality of life’ as my Aontu friend insists.

5)There wasn’t a bus lane on Shannon Bridge

6) A dedicated pedestrian & cycling bridge will take a minimum of 5 yrs to agree & complete.
7) Emergency services operate on Sarsfield Bridge & every other Bridge with one lane in either direction. Why can they not on SB?

8)Establishing cycle lanes does not ‘discriminate’ against children w/disabilities. It is there for their use too.
9)The installation of the temp lane on SB was driven by public health concerns not political agendas. However it has since become politicized.

10) SB is infinitely more difficult (& more unsafe) to navigate as a cyclist than a motorist. 100%.
11) Young & not so young (ahem) mums & dads drop their kids to school in Lmk each school day by bike-regardless of rain or snow. Just because cllrs don’t see that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Just wanted to clear up the inaccuracies. All the rest is political power playing.
