With all the calls for diversity work in predominantly white institutions, I quote @andersonpaak: "I'm glad that you finally made it to the future but you're late/And the price is through the * roof/if you want you could wait outside the building/i ain't takin' no more meetings."
BIPOC folks are not "holding out" the "secret" of how to diversity from predominantly white institutions (PWIs). We learned how to work more equitably and with greater care for everyone because not doing so meant real harm for ourselves and our communities.
If we could provide a diversity "checklist," we would have. It would have saved a lot of harm, hurt and suffering for our BIPOC folks, but also for LGBTQAI+ folks, disabled folks. "Diversity" is an ongoing, perpetual process of reflection and care, not a "goal" to achieve.
And when BIPOC folks have done the FREE emotional and intellectual labor to point out things that need to be addressed, and even how that process can begin, PWIs find this too "political" or inconvenient or even "emotional."
And if we were being capitalist about this, we'd have patented and trademarked a checklist, sold it for eleventy billion dollars and started our own damn institutions that provided equitable pay, universal healthcare, affordable childcare, free college, and retirement benefits.
