The Trump Administration has been awful for #LGBT Americans. A thread! https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1296305484279021570
From jump, one of the first actions of the Trump Administration was to roll back critical protections for transgender kids in schools. https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/02/23/trump-administration-withdraws-transgender-student-protections #protecttranskids
Trump then fired #transgender troops from the military via tweet, a mean-spirited move that was roundly criticized by members of his own party and top defense officials. https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/08/28/trumps-attack-transgender-troops-becomes-us-policy
Trump's Justice Department reversed course on #LGBT discrimination, arguing for broad religious exemptions that allow discrimination and arguing that federal law doesn't cover #LGBT people. (They were wrong, by the way, both times.) https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/09/13/us-justice-department-looks-curtail-lgbt-protections
This is in addition to new DOJ and HHS guidelines expanding religious objectors' ability to deny care for women, LGBT people, and others, with little regard for how their care would suffer. https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/10/06/trump-administration-restricts-access-contraception
While we're on the subject of religious exemptions, the administration has done nothing to address - indeed, has encouraged - state laws creating a license to discriminate against #LGBT people. Here's our report on the topic. https://www.hrw.org/report/2018/02/19/all-we-want-equality/religious-exemptions-and-discrimination-against-lgbt-people
The Trump Administration has also failed to address the persistent barriers that #LGBT people face in accessing healthcare in the US, jeopardizing their right to health. Here's another report documenting that problem: https://www.hrw.org/report/2018/07/23/you-dont-want-second-best/anti-lgbt-discrimination-us-health-care
The Trump Administration hasn't supported the #EqualityAct, a bill passed by the House that would extend basic, commonsense antidiscrimination protections to #LGBT people in the US. (About 70% of the US public favor those protections, btw.) https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/03/16/why-us-needs-equality-act
Under the Trump Administration, HHS has sought to roll back nondiscrimination protections for #LGBT people in adoption and foster care services and other federally funded programs. https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/12/19/us-agency-could-pave-way-anti-lgbt-discrimination
Just this summer, the Trump Administration doubled down on rules that purport to write #trans people out of healthcare protections, continuing to defend that move in spite of a SCOTUS decision clarifying that sex includes gender identity. https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/06/25/trump-administration-doubles-down-trans-discrimination
And the administration shows no sign of stopping their assault on LGBT rights. They just took a stab at *another* rule allowing providers to turn #transgender people away from homeless shelters. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/us/politics/hud-transgender.html
Trump is still fighting in court to strip US citizenship FROM A BABY because the administration insists on treating same-sex parents as second class citizens. https://www.lambdalegal.org/blog/20200817_state-dept-appeals-court-decision-child-citizenship
And this is scratching the surface. A more complete breakdown of all the anti- #LGBT actions from the administration is available here, courtesy of @TransEquality: https://transequality.org/the-discrimination-administration
The ad touting Trump's #LGBT bona fides is a joke. He doesn't have them. He's consistently attacked and weakened protections for LGBT people - especially transgender people - and has been on the wrong side of virtually every fight LGBT people are fighting.
