Thinking about the massive impact radio has had on my life during what I now know is #NationalRadioDay. I never thought that not having cable TV as a kid would positively impact my life (8-year-old me lacked foresight), but it absolutely has.
Getting to @SyracuseU and finding my way at @z89radio
and @waersports was one of the most impactful things to ever happen to me. I truly felt like I belonged. Radio, and the friends that came with it, was my life in college.
The thing that is so magical about radio is that you can make it whatever you want it to be. The canvas is blank. And just as important, you find that the best way to be successful is just by being who you are. That's powerful, especially at a young age.
There are few thrills (roll your eyes, it's ok) for me like being on a long drive and just scrolling through the frequencies to find out what's out there on the radio. That's how I found @alancoxshow here in Cleveland, and @howaboutafresca when he was on ESPN radio overnights.
And before there was streaming/downloadable music, there was the thrill of hearing my favorite song on @z100newyork and sprinting to the family stereo in the living room to record it off the radio so I could listen back to it. In that case, I hoped the DJ didn't talk to the post
And on the occasions now where I get to be back on the radio, it's a powerful experience. You're connecting with people in their cars, in their homes, at their workplace, and they're inviting you in. It may not be the medium it once was, but radio still means a ton to me.
