I applaud and stand in solidarity with @duckrabbitblog & all those who have raised their voices about @MagnumPhotos ongoing support of men who take abusive, exploitative & unethical photos of children. + https://twitter.com/MaazaMengiste/status/1296450836730654722
When Olivia Arthur calls those photos "historical materials" the question back is "Who's history?". Photographs that exploit Black and Brown people have been used as material documents to justify colonialism, slavery, rape, pillage, segregation, abuse, theft +
Dear Olivia, whose history are these photographs supporting? What history is it defending and promoting? Whose voice are we hearing, and why?
We want to think that exploitative photos designed to subjugate entire groups of people were over after colonialism but look at @MagnumPhotos. Look how it gets dressed up & made slick. Look how it is awarded. Tell me that colonial explorers weren't dressed up & awarded too+
Yesterday's explorers, those men who "braved the wilds" to report back to "civilization" hid their interior rot behind photos of people they said were "savage" and "exotic". They claimed they had to resort to violence so the West could profit from their exploits +
