I'm hype to share our recently(ish) published @acmdis2020 paper "Inclusion at Scale: Deploying a Community-Driven Moderation Intervention on Twitch".
It's a design activism case study about @anykeyorg's #glhfpledge. No time for 10 pages? Here's 10 tweets. https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3357236.3395514

1/ Big time cultural change is happening in live steams. They're a new agora for the youth. Social scientists clocked it a while ago. @ybika @miaC
HCI researchers joined in, and a few have managed to briefly test design interventions in the real world ecosystem. @josephseering

2/ Those who occupy & study the wilds of the web have identified harassment as a serious issue for marginalized folks. @KishonnaGray @marylgray
As interaction design activists we feel compelled to offer a critical, community-centered response to this pressing social problem.

3/ So we asked ourselves: how can we design a positive intervention to increase inclusion in an online platform at a significant scale?
And our selves answered: let's try a public awareness campaign that riffs on how gamers type GLHF (good luck, have fun) before a match!

4/ AnyKey launched the GLHF pledge in Oct. 2017.
Like the interface of an online petition, our site presented a simple code of conduct that anyone could commit to uphold by signing with their name & email.
Signers were entitled to unlock the AnyKey global chat badge on Twitch.

5/ During the 73 days that #glhfplege v1.0 was active, 200K+ people signed it
More than 1% of Twitch's daily active users unlocked our badge
The AnyKey was adopted as a symbol of inclusion, but our pledge system was not prepared for the success

6/ Apart from just a technical overhaul to handle the scale, we realized the GLHF pledge needed a moderation system that could provide meaningful support to the community.
So we built a whole new system to report & address badge abuse using Ruby on Rails. https://twitter.com/Uberfishh/status/951461347937591296

7/ AnyKey relaunched the #glhfpledge in Sept. 2019. But we spoiled our own surprise with a viral leak over the summer.
The AnyKey badge was reactivated on Twitch for testing and 25K+ people signed up during the 4 days we accidentally left the door open

8/ Luckily we still had a refreshed look and a new referral leaderboard to share with the community for the real relaunch.
But the moderation system was what we were most eager to test. Over 106 days we receive 309 reports, warned 77 pledgers, and revoked 40 badges.

9/ Our empathetic moderation approach managed to cultivate meaningful reform
But we couldn't afford to hire another mod, so @rhoulette was on her own handling all the reports
TL;DR: We effected some positive change at scale & learned lessons from the challenge of trying.

10/ "Implications for Design Activism" is an actual section title in our paper
@dourish
Design activists should:
• Contribute to grassroots aesthetics
• Center communities instead of platforms
• Take a restorative approach to design
• Join the collective effort for change

Epilogue/
As of today more than 700K people have signed the #glhfpledge
We're eager to integrate the AnyKey badge into more platforms and looking for partners to make it happen
Together we actually can turn the internet into comfy place for all
