It seems I already have the historical accuracy police in my mentions and I'm not even done writing the book...But that's okay...I 👏🏾HAVE👏🏾 TIME.
And it seems Sylvia needs a history lesson from me today. https://twitter.com/SylviaWoodham/status/1296351561162129408
There were 43 countries w/ exhibitions at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, 11 of them were from Latin America including Dominican Republic, Venezuela & Mexico (where my heroines hail from.)
Jose Martí the Cuban poet and philosopher wrote about his visit to the exposition.
He wrote about seeing Latinx on the grounds of exposition and about the details of the pavilions that were there...The Mexican pavilion was over 2,000 square meters in size and built by two Mexican architects. The Mexican delegation that came to Paris had almost 2,000 people.
The Dominican Republic Pavillion exhibited timber, cacao, rum and amber. It was built by the French Architecture firm MM Courtois. The Dominican delegation was sent to France by president Ulises Heureaux.
The Venezuelan Pavillion was built in the Spanish Renaissance style. FUN FACT Antonio Guzman Blanco who had been president of Venezuela for 19 years was overthrown and arrived in Paris in 1889...Which probably made it really awkward when he showed up at the exposition. *cringe*
I even know that steamer they came in @SylviaWoodham ...Did you know there was a whole line of ships traveling from different ports in Latin American to Europe? No?
THERE WAS. But my heiresses wanted to shop, so they went to NYC first and went to Paris on SS La Bretagne!
So here are two lessons for you today @SylviaWoodham:
1. You don't know a whole lot.
2. Black people have dealt with racists for too long, and we always have receipts.
Why don't you go fact check Regency dukes with abs and good teeth and leave historical accuracy about PoC to us?
You can follow @ladrianaherrera.
