/ Was at a local school (not my district) this AM because my MS aged boys have been in a 2x/wk training group all summer. Noticed what looked to be a HS team practice/skills workout (not my sport) happening on a different part of the field.
/ No noticable coach or adult present. That being said it was extremely well organized. Athletes were getting quality work-it was a true credit to the young athletes that were participating. It made me realize how awesome it is to coach HS sports.
/ It also made me question again why HS coaches in southern Maine are being prevented from working with athletes. If a coach would have been there what would have been different health-wise? In fact having a qualified coach running the drills would have made it safer.
/ A school hired coach could have stressed the imprortance of wearing masks in public, making the appropriate social choices, and thinking of the team and teammates first.
/ A school coach would be able to care for any athlete that suffered an injury or health emergency during the workout because we are required to keep certifications in CPR and first aid. A school coach would be stressing the importance of school work and the grades.
/ A school coach would have continued to make the deep meaningful connections with their student-athletes that are life long lasting. It is wayyy more than “just a sport”
/ Again credit to the young athletes I watched this morning. I don’t teach you, coach you, or even know you but you impressed this coach and gave him hope. Thank you!
