STEP 1: REGISTER TO VOTE. Have a valid Michigan driver's license or state ID? Head to http://michigan.gov/vote .

STEP 2: APPLY FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT. Starting now, you can apply here: https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/avapplication .
Applications can be mailed, hand delivered, faxed or emailed to your local clerk. You have until Oct. 30 to request a ballot to be mailed to you. But don't wait; do this ASAP!

STEP 3: FILL OUT YOUR BALLOT. By October or sooner, you should receive your ballot in the mail.

STEP 3: FILL OUT YOUR BALLOT (continued). When you get your ballot, complete it ASAP so you don't risk forgetting about it or the ballot getting lost.

STEP 4: RETURN YOUR BALLOT. You have 3 choices:
1. Mail it (do this ASAP to leave no room for USPS error)
2. Drop it off (many jurisdictions offer dropboxes for absentee ballots)
3) Take it in person to your local clerk.
