Why is Instagram the home to great athlete content?

Authenticity. Access. Amplification.

Over time those three things have led to the perfect storm to both make IG the social fabric of the NBA, and the defacto recruiting rankings for Gen Z ballers.👇

Authenticity: I learned first hand by managing athlete social at @Octagon that their IG content is real. They wouldn’t give me access to their accounts!

This also shows up in the content. Athlete content is most often shot from the phone, and looks like friend/family content.
Sure you may see some feed content that is a professional photograph or edited video, but across Stories, Live and in the comments you see athletes represent them true selves in a way you can’t see anywhere else.

That leads to...

Access: Athlete content looking like friend...
content means you are brought into their inner circle.

Where else can you celebrate Taco Tuesday w/the LeBrons? Or live stream game night with the Currys?

Athletes also bring us to places attached to their sport we’d never see. From offseason training to 🏆 parade floats.
On the amateur level, it also takes us to high school gyms we’d otherwise never see. Before they’re picked up by the Overtime’s of the world, the Zion’s and McClungs only have their own IG to grab the public’s attention. We are now watching future stars from age 14, not 19-22.
Amplification: Athletes break on social, and very often due to the above two points, that is happening on Instagram.

We’ve all observed the local phenom who you couldn’t wait for the rest of the world to find out about. It wasn’t until their breakout performance on TV that...
Everyone else saw what you had seen in your towns gym.

Now it takes just one video, one major reshare, and a moment we all can experience together from our phones.

Views are leading to recruiting visits and legends are being built on the Gram before they are on the main stage.
