I think there are three truly unconscionable actions by UNC because, awful as it is, I can squint and see that the university system is teetering on the verge of collapse due to the flight of public funding. And UNC, especially, is beholden to the awful board of governors.
1) Not mass testing students on the way out. This is horrific, and turns a university and Orange County disaster into a statewide disaster. That's inexcusable. I don't care if you send people in hazmat suits to the dorms to test them while they're packing, you do it.
2) Not pausing classes for a week. Admin punted on this to the individual colleges, who in turn punted to individual instructors. Students are freaking out because they have no guidance. Because any missed classes have to be made up, you just extend things unevenly for students.
Not pausing classes so students can adjust to this fucking trap admin put them in is cowardly, despicable, and an abdication of really basic responsibility.
3) Not offering the pass/fail option which was implemented during the Spring semester shutdown. It's the exact same situation on paper (much worse in practice), so not offering guidance on this is, again, self-centered and completely avoidant of responsibilty.
All three of these things are so galling because they're mostly independent of the austerity pressures from 08 which still determine so much of university functioning. Not pausing a week and not offering P/F (I think they'll buckle on the latter) are extremely doable.
