RETWEETING IN ALL CAPS https://twitter.com/robertslavin/status/1296417137754550273
Seriously though, this has big implications for both how we assess students this fall, and, more importantly what we do with the data.
Students will backslide. And many will be assessed on platforms or in formats they are unfamiliar with (or minimally, out of practice with). The results will be depressed.
This doesn’t mean that they’ve lost the ability to read, write, or do math, and it most certainly doesn’t mean that we need to start from scratch and spend the fall remediating what we believe was lost.
Our students will benefit much more if we take the time to learn where they were in March of last year — areas of strength and areas of need — and go from there, keeping expectations high and recognizing that our students have enormous capacity for growth.
