I am writing a response to the article recently written in the Guardian reinforcing that it is wildly inaccurate. I can confidently say as an unbiased, female ex-Rocksteady employee, that it is an incredible studio and a great place for women to work. https://twitter.com/RocksteadyGames/status/1296132223612182531
I was employed by Rocksteady when the individual wrote the letter. I was asked to sign it by the individual but I refused on the basis the letter was inaccurate, and given the content could have been considered unprofessional.
I was 100% on board with implementing improvements to the studio that would benefit the female workforce employed at the time. I didn't feel the letter was necessary to the cause.
As I refused to sign the letter, I was subsequently cut out of the individuals agenda and quite frankly felt excluded by them. This went entirely against what the initial pitch to improve the studio for women seemed to promote.
Only once the letter was received by management and meetings held officially was I brought back into the loop to contribute towards improvements for my female co-workers.
The claims that nothing was done to improve life for us as women there are inaccurate. As soon as the letter was received, the women were brought into a series of meetings by management to discuss how we could make the studio better.
A seminar was held. We had lunches arranged for the women only, so we could get to know each other and support each other better. Senior female members of staff from the wider group offered to mentor us if we needed it.
Sadly the cases of harassment in this industry are all too prevalent. I’m aware of certain events at Rocksteady that took place and in no way discounting anything that the girls experienced. Said instances were dealt with by management with the UTMOST urgency and professionalism.
Speaking as a woman from the games industry, not once in the two years I was employed at Rocksteady did I feel I was working in a toxic, disrespectful environment. I was treated as an equal and to my knowledge so was every other female I worked alongside.
These accusations come at a time that seems, almost calculated? The letter that was meant for management only, was sent over 2 years ago. The person responsible for the letter left Rocksteady over a year ago.
The studio is about to make the biggest announcement they’ve made in over 5 years and all of a sudden the letter comes to light again? If you ask me it’s far too much of a coincidence and feels more like sabotage and petty revenge from a disgruntled ex-employee than a just cause.
