Peak Rockstar Games is getting this on a mission with the objective "kill Bronte"
It's a bit where you storm a guy's house with the objective of killing him. The door to the room he's in is locked, you're supposed to kick it in and a cutscene happens. I thought instead I'd go out the window of another room that shares a balcony with that room, get him that way
I was able to smash the window of the empty room, get out onto the balcony, go to the other window, smash it, go in, and the guy was just standing there. Game wouldn't let me shoot him so I dropped some dynamite at his feet and got this fail message.
On the day Rockstar stops undermining their big cool highly systemic open worlds with locked-on-rails "shoot the hinges" missions, I will eat every hat in Red Dead Redemption 2
I don't mean just to dunk on the game, my point is really "look how close this was to being cool". I was able to execute my entire plan, the game just wasn't interested. Even if it just triggered the cutscene on either entrance, that would have been okay
This is a great comparison actually. An escort mission in GTA3 has a guy trying to get out of town, the cartel don't know where he is but want to stop him. You can tail him and see what happens, or just drive ahead to the airport and look for the ambushes https://twitter.com/davidwildgoose/status/1296411087852703745?s=20
Either way is fine, the win condition is "he gets into the airport alive" not you following some plan. You could also just get a big heavy truck and ram his car past the ambushes too quickly for them to kill him
To expand on "on rails literally" - I hit a bit of RDR2 tonight where you wash up on a beach all sunburnt and filthy. You're meant to walk down the beach for a while. I thought, well, first thing I'm doing is getting in the water to wash all this crap off https://twitter.com/joewintergreen/status/1296480601709727745?s=20
Because that's a cool thing you can do in this game, you get dirty, you go clean yourself up. Anyhoot, I couldn't walk to the water because it turned out I was locked to a spline. Normal movement mode, normal camera control, hud displayed, but I can only walk the way it wants
I get you don't want me to walk off into the wilderness because you have a story cutscene coming up. Maybe this would be a good time for some basic level design???
To be clearer this is less of a thing in this game than Rockstar's other games. I got a lot of hours into it before anything as egregious as this happened.
Really any time this game sucks it feels like they got tired and relapsed into doing GTA for a minute
Max Payne 3 has those moments too. They can't not get some GTA-ass garbage in there and it really stands out
