I really didn't want to do this, but it turns out I am incapable of sitting silently by and so...
Clearly it is legitimate to discuss the merits and demerits of any piece of journalism, but personal vitriol is not. So much of the vicious and co-ordinated abuse in connection with the Kirsty Wark documentary has been gendered.
Those who use words like "witches", "bitches" "covens" and "tricoteuses" are making this not merely about the quality of the programme but about the sex of those involved in making it.
I have not heard any criticism of the men who contributed to it. When you think about what lay at the heart of the trial and the programme - allegations of sexual assault and what does and doesn't constitute acceptable behaviour - this is incredibly telling.
I say all this in the knowledge that some of the criticism is sincere and not expressed in those terms. But there are many, many others who are using it as a fulcrum for their own misogyny.
Imo, the world would be a better place if those commentators fixating on a one-off programme focused as much of their energy on the problem of misogyny prevalent within sections of the Yes movement + Scottish society in general + insidious attempts to silence women.
