Many people use net spend to calculate how much a football club spent . This is not the case now. Most Football clubs account these costs using a method called "Player Amortisation"

This method will show us how SEVERELY underfunded Man United are

Player amortisation is the transfer fee of the player divided by the length of the contract. Every year, the amortised value of the player goes down depending on how many years the player has played for the club

*I will not include any contract extensions signed by players

For Example:
Ronaldo's transfer to Juve on a 4-year contract. So every year, Ronaldo's amortised value goes down by 25M. Let's say they sell him after 2 years for 70M. He's worth 50M by then in amortised value, so they could report a 20M profit in their books
