So here's the thing: Usually when someone fantasizes about living in a "commune" with all their friends, in my experience, they don't mean a literal commune.
Most already successfully manage roommates & apartment life, just want their neighbors & roommates to be people they like https://twitter.com/3liza/status/1296226302349856773

"Commune" is obviously the wrong word there, but it's easier than "a multi-family housing unit or complex large enough to accommodate everyone I like where we can occasionally pool resources if desired but also have no expectations or responsibility for anyone involved to do so"
It all stems from lack of housing stability and need for community.
People want their friends to all have a safe place with easy access to each other, where we can help each other when possible and we don't each individually have to struggle with everything all the time.

We want our neighbors to not be assholes. We want roommates who won't steal our stuff.
We want a friend to be able to pop over for a few minutes on a whim when we're lonely, without having to drive or take a bus across town.

But - most importantly - none of that is expected to come at the expense of anyone's personal boundaries or safety.
A tight-knit community willing to take care of each other doesn't have to take the form of sleeping in huts or a ≥10:1 bathroom ratio

I don't want to live in what amounts to a self-sufficient dorm, and I don't know anyone who actually does.
I do, however, want all my friends to be safe and housed, and as a major plus, with and by like-minded people so that we could encourage and enrich each other's lives
