On 6 August 2020, at the height of the citizen-led #ZimbabweanLivesMatter campaign, ZimRights began a series profiling Community Champions under persecution by the state, as a way of answering the questions from the global community: What is happening in Zimbabwe?

@icecube @un
The Campaign is aimed at bringing global limelight to the human rights welfare of activists and citizens in danger, in the hope that the state will give justice a chance.

The first activist profiled was Godfrey Kurauone, a councillor from Masvingo, currently being detained at Masvingo remand. He is charged among other things with Criminal Nuisance, a charge that emanates from a protest song he sang at a funeral.

You can find Godfrey’s profile here on our blog http://www.zimrights.org.zw/blog-post15.html and many under activists under prosecution.

“I’m calling for the government of Zimbabwe to release all political prisoners, including Godfrey Kurauone, who represent the country’s future. Justice demands it,”: she tweeted

We appreciate this solidarity with activists that sometimes are invisible on the global radar. We hope many more global leaders and activists will join in raising voices about ‘invisible activists’ who the government believes they can be tortured or even get eliminated in silence
As a grassroots movement, we care about these activists because they drive community consciousness against repression.

#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
They maybe unknown to the world but they are known to their communities and are loved by their families. And they are many. They include Henry Chivhanga, Heather Mupambwa, Panashe Sivindani and others.

In a country where championing labour rights is seen as a crime, many citizens prefer to tow the line and are not prepared to fight for these rights openly. But this is not so with a young trade union leader, Obert Masaraure.

#ZimbabweanLivesMatter @hrw @HRF @_AfricanUnion @un
With many trials hanging over his head, Masaraure is yet again I!n hiding as his right to personal security has been compromised.

#ZimbabweanLivesMatter @HillaryClinton @AJEnglish @_AfricanUnion
In our #ZimbabweanLivesMatter Series, we feature @OMasaraure who wants to be with his young family but is afraid the state will punish him for showing interest in demonstrating against corruption
