Wow. It's been over three years since publication, yet this is the first review of WHY I'M that properly understands what I was trying to do in the writing of it. https://twitter.com/tortoise/status/1296341261042016256
I tried to write that book with as much clarity as I could muster. It's been a strange experience, seeing the book received in all sorts of odd ways over the years. I just put it down to human conversation. We all bring our own projections, assumptions and baggage to the table.
I also really appreciate @nikeshshukla complimenting my writing style in his review. I often think WHY I'M is a victim of its own success, in that readers focus more on the function than the form of the book. It's so well put together that people forget I had to put it together.
I remember an interviewer once asking me if writing the book was like therapy, lmao. I'm actually in therapy. Therapy is unbridled, unrestrained word vomit. Researching, being edited, writing persuasively and succinctly... it's WORK.
One of the highest compliments I ever received with this book was when the Canadian author David Chariandy (who's incredible novel BROTHER is a masterpiece) said he loved the narrative structure.
