Family visit to historic Pevensey Bay, East Sussex. First up, a walk around the impressive walls of the #Roman sea fort they called Anderida, built c. AD290. Used as a base for a Roman fleet. The sea was closer than today. Imposing West Gate and masonry walls. Artists impression.
Medieval Pevensey Castle is located within the walls of the Roman fort. Castle dated 13th century. It’s where William the Conqueror likely built his defenses in 1066, when he landed his 700 odd ships in Pevensey Bay at the start of the Norman Conquest of England @EnglishHeritage
Located just outside the #Roman Walls at Pevensey is historic St Mary’s Church, Westham, thought to be the first church built by the Normans c. 1080.
