So I have seen a lot of posts about the movie "Cuties" ("Mignonnes" in French) that is showing on Netflix. I agree that the way Netflix presents the movie is quite nasty. I think that this deserves some criticism. However, I disagree with some of the outrage. 1/4
"Mignonnes" is directed by a French-Senegalese woman who grew up in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. Her name is Maïmouna Doucouré. The idea for the movie came from watching young girls dancing in a sexualized way at a neighborhood festival. It also incorporates her own 2/4
experience growing up in a bigamous family. It is not a movie made to cater to paedophiles but a well researched movie about girls growing up while navigating hyper sexualized social media culture as well as the various influences from French and immigrant cultures. 3/4
