Oregonians and Portlanders need to remember that various public employee retirement benefits are based on averages of the last months and years of the employees’ pay. When PPB overtime is widely increased, expect more costly retirements soon.
Overtime declarations (especially those declared by people who will benefit) should be viewed with extreme distrust. When ‘riots’ are declared or tear gas is fired in the last hour of a shift, one should assume some financial shenanigans or even assume outright horseshit.
If you’re organizing, try to stop the cops from benefiting financially. End the protest two hours before the shift ends. Start it up randomly hours after. Try that 10AM rally, or try for a six o’clocker. Keep the union accountants on their toes and the cops off their new boats.
Heck, mess with them and have zero presence for two or three days and then have three simultaneous rallies in three parts of town.
Personally, I am still unclear what the endgame is of these protests. The primary outcome I see is early-retired (and uncharged for their criminal conduct) cops counting their large stacks of city money in outer Clark County, Sherwood or on their new boat.
