hi this is a thread i wanted to make, so i could talk about this: sustainable fashion and fast fashion- and how brands bluff about how sustainable they are.
fast fashion describes lowcost designs which quickly go from catwalks to stores.
there is nothing wrong with wanting to buy a new outfit and the prices can seem enticing. but while fast fashion might seem cheap, there is a fast fashion environmental impact, so it comes at a cost.
the fast fashion industry is responsible for producing 20% of global wastewater. in 2015, the fast fashion industry created 92 million tons of wastewater. this results in the contamination of rivers, oceans, freshwater sources, and soil.
lets start with brands you should try not to shop from. and i myself can’t completely stop myself from buying from these brands because india has very few stores with clothing that kids our age would wear but we can atleast try to spend our money on other more sustainable brands.
anyways the brands you should avoid are- h&m, zara, forever 21, uniqlo, victoria’s secret, guess, gap, mango, adidas, shein, ucb, asos
sustainable brands- doctor martens(aren’t the most environment friendly but highly sustainable), ka sha by karishma shahani, nicobar by good earth, bodice by ruchika sachdeva, eka by rina singh, chola the label, converse(not very eco friendly but very sustainable)
sustainable brands often use materials from natural or recycled fabrics that require significantly less to no chemical treatment, little water, less energy and no fertilizers or pesticides to grow.
also, most brands that claim to be sustainable aren’t actually sustainable, dont buy that.
child labour is a particular issue for fast fashion because the supply chain requires low-skilled labour and some tasks are even better suited to children than adults. in cotton picking, employers prefer to hire children for their small fingers, which do not damage the crop.
workers making clothes for brands such as h&m endure sweatshop conditions, according to a grim report. they receive poverty wages, regularly faint in stifling conditions and are denied loo breaks. they are also not paid by the hour but by per alteration.
anyways this isn’t all i have to say, but like please stop shopping from fast fashion brands :)
