i’m a big fan of @drmistercody and @SomeMoreNews + other projects, but this is not a great look, in my humble opinion.

i know it’s super fun to make jokes about basic girls, or GoT superfans, or anything “cringey.” God knows I’ve done it myself. But I’ve been trying to move past that kind of snobby attitude.
When ppl post stuff like that, yeah. it’s goofy. It’s even cringey. But, while we can certainly have a conversation about the fandomization of politics/discourse - which is complex for sure - this stuff doesn’t really hurt anybody.
even if it’s not ideal, to screencap and pile on and mock just comes off as mean. and almost every time people post a bunch of “cringe” like this, it’s mostly women. And then - I guarantee you - those women get harassed when a big acct tweets screenshots like this.
It’s women who are being mocked for being too enthusiastic, for liking things the wrong way, for not knowing she needs to be more ironic and less sincere.
as @sadydoyle could have told you if you’d listened, women being harassed and mocked like this for not being lefty ~correctly~ is a real problem in our political discourse. yes, that attitude starts with dumb jokes, though it can be set off by anything (usually “being a woman”).
and it bores me, honestly. it’s deeply boring, because all this does is mock an “uncool” way of expressing political interest and excitement.
whatever gets people excited, you know? whatever gets people voting and engaged and thinking and discussing and changing. we all started somewhere, and we need as many entry points for being less shitty as we can possibly get.
wince at the aesthetics all you want, giggle in your group chat however you wish. but posting screenshots just to mock them, for something ultimately so inconsequential, isn’t very cute.
being kinder to each other is pretty good, though.
