The collection of books that is the Bible isn’t inherently bad or good. Like any other collection of books it is words on paper. We all get to choose if we’ll use it to harm others, excuse bigotry, discriminate, abuse people, play God... or if we simply won’t.

We can use it to support/condemn any one behavior, any one theology, any one belief. We’ve seen that as conservatives, progressives and everyone in between argue over interpretations, context, translations, intent, and any other aspect concerned w/exegesis and hermeneutics.

At the end of the day we all get to individually make the choice to determine how we will read it, how we will use it, how it will inform us, and how it will affect us.

We all get to choose how we read the Bible. Using it to excuse bigotry, harm, abuse, and support oppression, is an actual choice. You don’t have to agree with any person on it, you don’t have to get someone’s approval for your approach.

They may tell you that you do, but the truth is, you get to choose how you read the Bible (or if you want to read it at all). Your relationship to the collection of books that is the Bible doesn’t necessarily hinder or expedite your relationship with divinity.
(5)
It can, but it doesn’t have to. You could never read it and your relationship to divinity isn’t threatened (ask Jesus, or Mary Magdalene they never had one). Or you could read it obsessively and deny the divinity within and around you at every turn of every page.

When people tell me “the Bible says...” to excuse the harm they are causing, all I hear is “I’m choosing to believe...” because the Bible says, whatever you want it to say.
