This mansion built over 180 years ago was the residence of a Bagdhadi Jew, David Sassoon who arrived in India and built a thriving business dealing in opium and spices.
He was close to the British Government and this house was used to entertain the British Governor Lord Elphinstone...
David Sassoon suffered a hernia which was treated by Dr Hormasji Manekji Masina( note Mr Raut Saheb) and as a gift the mansion was handed over to Dr Masina and in 1907 it was converted to a hospital the first private hospital in Mumbai Masina Hospital after hs wife Jerbai Masina.
Cut to today ,the house that was called Sans Souci ,french for ' no worries' aptly houses the biggest private psychiatry unit in the city..
The house that discussed opium trade has a world class de-addiction and rehabilitation unit..
The hospital that has treated both the Spanish Flu pandemic and the Covid-19 pandemic is now back with it psychiatry outdoor, indoor, deaddiction and child and adolescent therapeutic services..
We look to follow this proud legacy
