So it took me years and watching RIGOR MORTIS with @yeloson (which is a VERY GOOD Chinese ghost movie, everyone should watch it) before I understood the superstition behind not opening your umbrellas indoors.
(though the original title of RIGOR MORTIS is just "Geung See" which is, you know, Cantonese for "vampire," particularly the hopping vampire, since the film is a tribute to the old Mr. Vampire movies of the 80s: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2771800/)
Anyways you're not supposed to open your umbrellas indoors, WHY?
In the film, there's a scene where these guardian-police(?) spirits come patrolling/looming down the hallway, dressed in ceremonial robes and wielding umbrellas.
The umbrellas are to catch errant spirits.

Yes, supernatural ghostbusters catch spirits using umbrellas.
So if you have closed your umbrella outdoors, you might have accidentally trapped a spirit in it, and if you open it indoors thereafter, you've now got an unwanted guest in your home.
That's why it's unlucky to open your umbrella indoors.

We've been getting a lotta rain here in Malaysia, folks, so, just saying, since it's Hungry Ghost Month, be careful when and where you open your umbrella.
Aside from accidentally bringing a ghost home, it just seems kinda rude to swoop 'em into your brolly bc you were careless.

PS!!!! @yeloson told me it was scary and it totally is so I wouldn't watch it unless it was broad daylight and he was in the same room with me for the whole movie (not a onerous thing when it's such a good movie) but he did not warn me that it's also a crying movie!!!!!!
it's so sad!!!!!!! have tissues.
