What do you think about privatizing law enforcement 👮👮‍♂️? What are the pros and cons?
1) Here are my thoughts. Pro: more likely to have qualified immunity removed. Let the private market provide liability insurance. Possibly move away from government bodies paying for policing altogether. If a cop hired by McDonalds’s is in the news for brutality it is negative
2) press for McDonalds AND the private security/law enforcement company. Many universities use private deputized police 🚔 if something goes wrong it’s bad publicity for the university. Bad publicity means lower profits. Cons: if they are intermingled with the government like
3) private prisons then it’ll be worse. Back to pros: The only upside to this would be the individual cops making less wages like prison cops around $40k a year starting. Also, police unions would be busted if it meant less profits for the company. Thus less power for lobbying DC
4) Is it possible to turn capitalism against itself? More like using capitalism against imperialism.
5) I love these replies! I’m always getting asked questions like this from friends who follow the IDW. I like the analogies that y’all are using and the great articles! This was a good thought experiment. We have to learn how articulate our responses to those far outside of the
6) left. Sometimes I fear that even we on the left far victim to canned talking points. I love the idea of defunding police and disbanding and building anew some police departments (like Camden, NJ). CAHOOTS in Eugene, OR are Social Workers that share responsibilities with Police
7) Defunding is the most likely to be implemented and some jurisdictions have moved to end Qualified Immunity.
