Today is yet another death anniversary of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar that goes by without his killers being "found", and without even the slightest reckoning of the country's relationship with superstition. I don't think people realise how shocking the murder was.
His tireless rationalist work - theoretical and on the ground - was incredibly threatening to religious extremists. It was rooted in Maharashtrian intellectual and social reform tradition.
He would do small public addresses and large seminars and patiently answer snide questions on religion. Many people turned to rationalism because of him.
His organisation even today fights against superstition all over Maharashtra. They work in extremely dangerous conditions to be able to save people from exploitative, murderous, vicious religious practices.
I will never forget that they murdered the country's most prominent rationalists one after the other. Rationalism is the enemy of Hindutva and of all religious extremism.
