To the extent any of this shit isn’t just deliberate wrecker politics, the fundamental flaw the democrats seem to hold is they genuinely believe “the youth” will outgrow their radical politics and fall in line with the rest of neoliberal society the way the boomers did in the 80s
The problem underpinning this is there is no path to upward mobility anymore if you weren’t born rich (there never really was, but at least the carrot could plausibly be dangled. Nobody is pretending ‘the American dream’ means jack shit anymore, including the gop)
Millennial is largely a meaninglessly amorphous term devised by soulless marketing freaks, but there IS an age cohort of people older than 25 and younger than gen xers who got screwed by the financial collapse and who will fundamentally never recover
The dems sincerely seem to not understand why these people voted for Obama in 2008 but won’t fall in with explicitly more conservative candidates now. This age cohort is not simply going to “grow up” & start giving a shit about manicured lawns in the burbs & their income taxes
Millions of people were battered by 8 years of pointless wars and total financial mismanagement and obama promised them hope and change they got...the exact same third way laissez faire politics that got them into that mess years before bush took office
Btw this isn’t just millennials. Those middle aged white blue collar workers in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania Obama fucked with the TPP? Yeah they all discovered Facebook in 2011 and they’re into qanon now. You’re NEVER getting those votes back
Meanwhile the 12-24 cohort arguably represents the final product of decades of atomization & alienation under capitalism. Kids dont have role models, they have YouTube channels to tell them either trans lives matter or to blow up a synagogue. Better pray they watch the right one
My point is Democrats are all fundamentally rainbow capitalists now because that’s what their donors want, but they do listen to polling data and it’s apparent they’re being pulled in different directions
They need to stop pretending Barney and Claire in the St. Louis suburbs are going to vote Democrat like they did in 1996. Those people think BLM is storing kidnapped white children in underground lairs. They’re gone, dude, you can risk alienating them to give people health care.
Hell, you already sort half assedly did it once! Barring a radical shift leftward, the Democrats will cease to exist as a meaningful force in politics in two generations. Granted it’s possible Nancy and friends know this and don’t give a shit, they’ll be dead anyway
But the last 5 years and counting have shown the Democrats have fundamentally wanted things both ways and frankly “we’ll do anything you want if you vote for us” doesn’t work as either ideology or a political strategy anymore
