#OTD 19 Aug 1942-Operation JUBILEE

Remarkable bravery and courage were displayed by the Canadian, British, and US forces that executed the ‘reconnaissance in force’ on the coastline of Dieppe, France.

These hard learned lesson must never be forgotten.
Originally named RUTTER which was cancelled on 7 July, the division level raid supported by tanks and commandos was intended to demonstrate Allied resolve while testing feasibility to conduct landings, gather intel, and destroy local infrastructure.
The attack landed on a 16km frontage at 4 flank locations in predawn hours with the main assault occurring 30 minutes later.

The landing area and ingress route of 4 Commando was especially treacherous as they navigated a break in the cliff to reach their objective area.
This video is within the break- the terrain was laid with barbed wire and covered by fire during the attack.
The South Saskatchewan Regt under LtCol C Merritt was landed on the wrong side of the River Scie estuary forcing them to cross a narrow bridge to get to their hill top objectives. They were opposed by blistering fire from above. Merritt led a rallying charging across the bridge.
Merritt would press the attack while systematically destroying opposing fortified positions. He was wounded twice and the unit took significant casualties. He would remain on the beach during the withdraw of his unit until his capture. He was awarded the VC for his actions.
The main attack at White/Red Beach came across pebble beach at the Dieppe itself. Defenders fired at the Essex Scottish Regt attacking unsupported across open beach from buildings and high points from the headlands causing heavy casualties.
The pebble beach and sea wall hampered the Churchill tanks and other mechanized assets of the Calgary Regt. The result was infantry left without support during the crucial first minutes of the attack. The tankers fought on static until the withdraw-the crews were captured or KIA.
Of the 6,100 troops involved 5,000 were Canadian-only 2,210 returned to England that day. In total over 10 hours 3,623 men were killed, wounded, or became POW. The RAF lost 106 planes and the Royal Navy lost 33 landing craft and a destroyer.
Visiting this battle site and studying its details has been one of my life’s greatest honors. The forces assaulting Dieppe will not be forgotten and today we honor their sacrifice-Semper Fi.
