1. A key role of #HumanRights treaty bodies is to scrutinize States’ compliance with treaty obligations. Their members are experts who are not #UN employees & live around the world. They meet for several weeks in Geneva but #COVID19 travel limits mean they can’t meet in person.
2. The #UN has struggled to identify ways for them to work effectively remotely as they face technological, language, & time-zone barriers to doing so. Since March 2020, however, they haven’t elaborated conclusions & recommendations on countries' #HumanRights records.
3. If in-person meetings are off til 2021, as threatened, innovation is needed. A year-long accountability gap is intolerable. #HumanRights defenders rely on the treaty bodies functioning.Each TB should urgently propose ways to resume scrutizing States' records despite challenges
