In Facebook's QAnon takedown today, Antifa was lumped in with other militia groups potentially encouraging riots. In my reporting there's not been a single incident where Antifa has been tied *definitively* to concrete/real-world harm. So I asked FB https://about.fb.com/news/2020/08/addressing-movements-and-organizations-tied-to-violence/ (1/5)
A spokesperson told me that a) Facebook is not designating Antifa as a Dangerous Org, and b) the takedown action today on groups like IGD and CrimethInc is tied specifically to the content in those groups, not anything broader about the Antifa movement (2/5)
Facebook also does conclusive attribution of real-world harm to specific movements (something researchers and journalists can’t do). It did this with Boogaloo, which recently organized to bring weapons to protests. So I asked, is FB attributing anything concrete to Antifa? (3/5)
Facebook spokesperson said no, Antifa does not look like Boogaloo on the social network; currently there is no existing Facebook evidence directly tying Antifa to violence. (4/5)
It’s just that groups like IGD & CrimethInc have discussed violence in aspirational—albeit hypothetical—terms, so Facebook made the determination that the groups should come down. Action will be limited to just those groups & not broadly applied to Antifa on FB. (5/5)
(cc @MeganSquire0, would love to know what you think about this!)
