TELEGRAPH EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal are close to signing Lille central defender Gabriel Magalhaes for a fee of 25 million euros (£22.6million). A five-year deal was finally agreed with the 22-year-old on Wednesday. ( @TelegraphSport)
Napoli also agreed a fee for Gabriel Magalhaes but he chose to join Arsenal instead where he will be paired with fellow Brazilian David Luiz. ( @TelegraphSport)
Jose Fonte (Gabriel’s teammate): “We have to understand that every players dream is to play in the Premier League. He [Maghãeles] has been asking questions about the Premier League, he has been asking about teams in the Premier League”
Napoli are in advanced negotiations for Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Sokratis’ Greek compatriot Kostas Manolas is urging him to join Napoli. (Tuttosport)
Arsenal are said to be demanding only €30-35m for Alexandre Lacazette, but Juventus could still find a better agreement if they can do a swap deal. ( @cmdotcom)
Kieran Tierney on the difference between English & Scottish football: “The first couple of sessions, the tempo. The first session, I was against Martinelli, he’s a young boy, I knew he was good. Then I said, ‘Woah, this is the standard, he is unbelievable!’” ( @opengoalsport)
Tierney on Mikel Arteta: “We do video meetings most mornings, what we’re going to do in training or if we’re coming up against this team who play like that, we’ll work on that. He literally tells you how the game is going to go, he can talk you through a game before it happens.”
Kieran Tierney on David Luiz: “He’s a legend. The biggest legend ever. I love him. He’s so good with all the young boys & everybody loves him. He’s a proper leader, like even if he’s not got the armband, he still leads.” ( @opengoalsport)
Tierney: “I signed the same day as David Luiz. He is a winner, a born winner. He was saying to me during the season when we were doing bad, ‘we are going to win silverware this season, believe me’. He is about motivational speeches & all that, when he talks, everybody listens.”
Tierney on Luiz: “He said to me one game when I hadn’t had my best game, we drew, we should have been winning as it was a home game, the fans were on us & we weren’t doing well, he just went, ‘Don’t worry about it, you keep playing your football & I will take the heat’.”
Kieran Tierney on Aubameyang: “His pace mate, he’s the quickest player I’ve ever seen in my life. Mbappe was always the quickest I said but he’s just that quick, he’s frightening.“ ( @opengoalsport)
Tierney on Aubameyang: “If the ball’s in behind he’s running onto it. See the one vs Man City, I’ve played it down to him & he scored. His touch to take it in on his right, he still gets the chance to look up & square it, then just puts it through the keepers legs. Unbelievable.”
Arteta: "I was worried [when I returned to the club as manager], I saw a lot of things that worried me in terms of the unity, the energy that was around the place. But I must say that straight away in the next few days, I completely felt that something was changing"
Arteta: "They [the players] really got on board, they changed their attitude straight away. They started to be together, to train really, really well & paid a lot of attention to what we wanted to do"
Arteta on turning our struggling side into FA Cup champions: "The first thing was that I got everyone together, the staff and the players, and I told them what I thought about them and why this wasn't working. If we were going to continue like this, it was never going to work.''
Arteta: "I am very positive about where we are. I don't know if we are ahead of schedule, obviously if you had told me that we were going to win the cup before we joined then I probably would be happy with that"
Arteta: "What I am very positive & very passionate & encouraged about is what we can do in the future & if we make the right decisions I am super confident that we can bring the club back to the top"
CONFIRMED: The fixtures for the Premier League 2020/21 season will be released at 9:00am tomorrow morning.
