Want 5 takeaways from Jets camp? Follow this thread ...
1) TE Chris Herndon is a vital player here, and the early signs are good that chemistry between he and Sam Darnold is right where it should be with Herndon back from injury. And Herndon remains a very impressive physical specimen—which was obvious while I was out there.
2) The Jets would love to have Denzel Mims practicing, but the rookie has gotten the attention of coaches even as he’s been sidelined (hamstring), with work ethic and professionalism showing in the (virtual) classroom. On the field: converted QB Jeff Smith is a WR darkhorse.
3) Another rookie to watch: S Ashtyn Davis. Ball skills, size, speed to burn (he’s actually the team’s backup PR now too). The Jets already have 2 safeties (Maye, McDougald), that can play high and low. And Davis could be a third, as they try to mitigate the loss of Jamal Adams.
4) The Jets are quietly optimistic that they could get pretty decent play out of edge guys Jordan Jenkins, Tarell Basham and Jordan Willis. There’s no Khalil Mack in there. But each of the three are going into contract years, and have looked motivated early in camp.
5) Sam Darnold looked in command while I was there—and part of that was spending much of the offseason cleaning up details in his game. So much for him will ride on how the OL comes along, but he looked steady. The hope is improved mechanics will lead to improved accuracy.
